more info on me

Entrepreneur.
Storage Scientist.
Code Mechanic.

Welcome. My name is Ellis H. Wilson III, hence the "v3," but you can just call me Ellis. This is my homepage, so I'm going to go ahead and assume you came here to find out more about me. In that case:

I love to research, design, engineer, debug, and deliver exciting and often complicated things that improve people's lives. Companies. Next-generation computer storage components. Software of (almost) all varieties. Elegant yet lightweight websites. Even a few gadgets that aren't merely made up of or designed to manipulate bits. Following finishing my Ph.D. in August of 2014, I began employment as a Software Engineer at a great company, Panasas, Inc, in Pittsburgh, PA, USA where I also live.

But I'm not simply "all work and no play," as evidenced in my pictures. For more specifics on who I am and what I'm all about, feel free to check out my About page, or, for solely the professional aspects, take a look at my CV or if you've got a lot of time on your hands feel free to peruse my Ph.D. dissertation.

Oh, Hey There.

If you're just looking for a boring mugshot, here you go.

More Than Me

But I'm more than that -- a (very) happily married husband to a (very) beautiful wife.

Once a Runner

And once upon a time, I was a NCAA DI Cross Country and Track athlete under one of the finest coaches ever.

Ellis Wilson on Beach with Bonfire
The Wilds

I've always enjoyed the outdoors, particularly when 10 foot tall bonfires on the beach are involved.

Ellis Wilson, Friends, and Beer
Saccharomyces cerevisiae

And, like any proper American, I love a good beer (or 2) amongst great friends.

Out-Of-Core Computing with Compute-Local Non-Volatile Memory

Drawing parallels to the rise of general purpose graphical processing units (GPGPUs) as accelerators for specific high-performance computing (HPC) workloads, there is a rise in the use of non-volatile memory (NVM) as accelerators for I/O-intensive scientific applications. However, existing works have explored use of NVM within dedicated I/O nodes, which are distant from the compute nodes that actually need such acceleration. As NVM bandwidth begins to out-pace point-to-point network capacity, we argue for the need to break from the archetype of completely separated storage...

Exploring Big Data Computation atop Traditional HPC NAS Storage

The Apache Hadoop framework has rung in a new era in how data-rich organizations can process, store, and analyze large amounts of data. This has resulted in increased potential for an infrastructure exodus from the traditional solution of commercial database ad-hoc analytics on network-attached storage (NAS). While many data-rich organizations can afford to either move entirely to Hadoop for their Big Data analytics, or to maintain their existing traditional infrastructures and acquire a new set of infrastructure solely for Hadoop jobs, most supercomputing centers do not...

Physically Addressed Queueing (PAQ): Improving Parallelism in Solid State Disks

NAND flash storage has proven to be a competitive alternative to traditional disk for its properties of high random-access speeds, low-power and its presumed efficacy for random-reads. Ironically, we demonstrate that when packaged in SSD format, there arise many barriers to reaching full parallelism in reads, resulting in random writes outperforming them. Motivated by this, we propose Physically Addressed Queuing (PAQ), a request scheduler that avoids resource contention resultant from shared SSD resources. PAQ makes the following major contributions: First, it exposes...
